This is a nice piece by Quentin Hardy on the way in which AT&T boss Randall Stephenson is attempting to re-tool his workforce. It is a decent little kick-in-the-pants if you’re (like me) long of tooth and tired of trying to keep up in the digital age, but nowhere close to being able to retire in comfort.
Some interesting tidbits include:
- Randall, a lifetime Bellhead, started at the same time as his slightly older brother Kevin
- Kevin still works outside on the wires, while Randall calls the shots from the top
- Management feels like the workforce can eventually be one-third of its current 280,000 and be fine
- Funny little situation where an on-line education guru trying to show Randall something at headquarters and couldn’t get on the AT&T WiFi, so had to use his T-Mobile phone
